THE
DIFFERENT BARRIOS OF SAN QUINTIN
The naming of the barrios
was immediately done following the establishment of the town. First
to be named were:
GONZALO-
in honor of Don Gonzalo Ferreria, a prosperous farmer in that barrio;SAN PEDRO -in honor of Don Pedro Medenilla, a rich and influential
cattle rancher of theplace; CASANTAMARIA-AN - named after the settlers who hailed from the
town of Sta. Maria, Ilocos Sur;CABANGARAN -named after the industrious and thrifty settlers who
came from Bangar, La Union.
Named at a much later date were the barrios of:
ALAC - named after a favorite native wine called "arak";BALIGAYAN - named after the dexterity of the settlers thereat manipulating

(Baligaya) rice; BOLINTAGUEN - was named in honor of Don Bolivio Antaguen, a well-known
chieftain in that place;LAGASIT - from the words "laga" meaning "to
weave" and "si-it" meaning "thorns of spines".Old folks say that the Lagasit River was once imbedded with many fish hatcheries, and to protect them from thieves who used to prowl at
night at the hatcheries, they wove spines to protect them. Thus the place
was named "Lagasit".
The other settlements have related stories on how they were named:
CALOMBOYAN - was named for its numerous "Lomboy" or
Duhat trees; CARAYACAN- for being once traversed who came by a big "Carayans"
or river; CABALAOANGAN - named
after the settlers who came from Balaoan, La Union; SITIO SILI -
named because of its abundant pepper plants; SITIO CAMANGGA-AN - for its having plenty of Mango trees; SITIO CAPAL- PALIA-AN - for
its many "parya" of ampalaya; SITIO MINUSICUAN - named after the famous musicians
in the place; LUMAYAO -
the early people are good jumpers; NANGAPUGAN - named
after the art of making "apog" or lime, a livelihood of the
early settlers;LABUAN -
named because of the frequent "labu-labo" or fights among
the early
settlers and their neighboring places (story based on historical
research submitted by Mr. BANTOG -
a former Sitio of Brgy. Cabangaran and its name derived from the wordDionision T. Garcia);"Bantog" because the elevation of the terrain is very much
higher than Cabangaran and even the Poblacion area of the municipality; MABINI- the name derived from the existing Mabini Street, the main
inter-BarangayRoad of Barangays Mabini and Cabangaran, respectively;UNGIB the barrio where once abounds many caves or "yungibs". |
